Attention all sock knitters! I need your help!
I've never really been interested in knitting socks...I mean all that work, and they go inside your shoes! Well, I spent the weekend at cabin in North Carolina celebrating my most darling friend's wedding. The visit left me longing to knit something earthy and cozy, and hand knit socks seem like just the thing!
So- Where do I start? I need a cute pattern. And what side needles should I get? What kind of socks have you all done? I'm going to use this sock yarn I dyed.
Come on yarn grovers, I need you!

Your needle size depends on your yarn size. (Sorry to state the obvious!) Sock-weight yarns are usually knit on size 0 or 1 needles; dk weight on size 2 or 3, I think. (I haven't made too many dk weight socks.) Socks benefit from being knit fairly firmly.

I learned from Kristen - www.cometosilver.com - she has the most amazing tutorials for all methods. I highly recommend her site. As far as my needles, I seem to work best with #1s, and I think I prefer 4 or 5 dpns to 1 or 2 circs.

I've tried both 2 circs as well as dpns - and I'm a circ fan. Also, and I can't say this enough - GO FOR THE ADDI TURBOS! Most of my socks are knit on size 1 Addis (between 1 and 2 in the US system).
I also agree with Janice that there are lots of great patterns on Knitty for you to try. There's a very simple toe-up pattern called Widdershins (http://www.knitty.com/issuesummer06/PATTwiddershins.html) that will teach you the basics. Divide your skein in half and then just knit until you run out.
