What a wonderful holiday I spent with all my kids and grands. It was marvelous! Now that I have a little downtime, I am tossing around a couple of ideas for knitting projects. I am still knitting on Sothia - she stays in the car and is for the hours I spend taking my mom to doctors appts.

I was going to show a few of my projects I made for gifts this year.

First up, I bought a vintage Bucilla Felt kit off ebay (my second one) and made this adorable ABC wall hanging for mini Island Boy. Mini Orange boy got one last year for Christmas and loves it. All the ornaments are hand sewn. Only thing machine sewn is the rick rack around the edges.

Second, I made these adorable ABC letters and a bucket to put them in. My only regret is that I did not do numbers. Didn't even think about it. Got it off PINTEREST . Here is my photo of the ones I made. Loved loved loved this. Will most certainly make again - great gifts. And, by the way, if you haven't been to PINTEREST, you are missing A LOT! Love that website.

Next up I found these adorable tea mugs w/sidekick from Angela Ingram on Etsy. Bought one for Cheryl and one for my mom. Then I found a "tea wreath" to make on PINTEREST which I thought was the coolest thing. I made mine a bit smaller than the one on the tuitorial but let me tell you, they were a huge hit. I bought 2 boxes of assorted tea bags - mainly for color - and used those. I painted the clothespins, covered them in scrapbook paper scraps and voila! I love it so much that I just ordered my own mug from Angela's etsy shop on Monday!

I made some cute little felt citrus coasters for Island Girl. Here is a link to the Purl Bee tutorial. Adorable!

I Island Girl a blanket out of Minkie fabric and Citron and Gray bird material on the back from Michael Miller but no photo; I made a slouchy hat for my niece and no photo. I forget to take them sometimes!

Off the blocking mat this morning, a plain old cowl I made from Cascade Yarns Eco Duo which is a glorious combo of baby alpaca and Merino wool that is undyed. Seed stitch border and just plain old knit.

Finally, here is a photo of Mini Orange boy who absolutely loved his car/train track quilt. I had shown it in a previous post .

A few other handmades but this was about it. Some I forgot to take photos - others the photos did not come out.

OTN now is Summer Flies - again - this time in a cashmere blend. AND the wonderful new Hiya Hiya SHARPs needles. If you haven't tried them, you don't know what you're missing.

Apples, fabrics and some yarn...

I cannot believe it is the middle of October already. I sit here trying to gather my thoughts for all the little gifties I have in mind for gifts by December end. My mind is frozen - so I decided to update on what I have been doing.

Apples galore. Every year this time finds me heading to North Georgia for my delectable Winesap apples. We will be blessed with Grandson #3(aka micro orange boy) in just a couple of weeks so it was necessary to restock my homemade applesauce!

One day, whilst visiting my Trader Joe's, I came across an over abundance of apples. Cortlands, MacIntosh, Jonathan, Rome, Delicious, and the list went on. What if I didn't go to NGA for my apples and bought locally instead? That is exactly what I did. I bought the equivalent of one bushel (7 square bags) of Cortland apples and made from it: 5 quarts of canned just sliced apples, 9-1/2 pints apple butter, and 7 pints of applesauce, no sugar please.

I was thrilled. So I treked back to TJ's and bought approximately one more bushel - this time Honeycrisp and MacIntosh. Little Mommy came over (yes! Orange boy and family moved to Marietta from the Rocket City which also took place end of September/1st of October) and we made more applesauce with the MacIntosh. The Honeycrisp I put up for apple desert delights over the next year. I. love. canning...

Next up I finished a quilt for Micro Orange Boy (see blue quilt below left) who should arrive on or around November 3rd. Each of my babies has to have their own quilt. I also found this adorable panel at my local quilt shop with trains and roads on it. I added a border, some flannel "nuts and bolts" fabric for the back and my long-arm quilter quilted it right up for me. Mini Orange Boy will get this at Christmas time.

As for the knitting front? I finished this hat for which I bought 2 kits. It is Techno Hat from Blue Sky Alpacas and I got them at KPixie. Love the yarn - so soft, fluffy and alpaca!

And to end it all are some most precious Baby Booties. This pattern hailed from Churchmouse Yarns and the pattern is Stay On baby Booties . Fun, quick and easy, I made these with Karabella Aurora 4 which I had leftover in my stash.

In shop news, I have put in a pre-order with Hiya Hiya needles for their new Sharp needles - both in fixed and interchangeable. Hiya Hiya anticipates that these needles should be ready for distribution on or around the first of December or shortly after... I have a pair and let me tell you, they are the best yet...

So I guess I have been busy. I'll end this by saying the next items up on my sewing/knitting agenda will not be able to be shown until after the holidays...

A lot of quilting...

I sent 4 quilt tops to Hazel, my longarm quilter. (click on the photos to see them larger). 2 are small Moda Halloween square quilts (about 36" x 42") which Mini Island Boy(with the Riley Blake spider fabric on the back) and Mini Orange Boy (with the Alexander Henry Pumpkins on the back)are already the recipients of. The 3rd Halloween quilt is quite a bit larger and stays here at Gaga's house. The 4th quilt is not finished yet - by that I mean I have to bind it. I hope to do that over the long weekend.

In other news, I have been working on Sothia and I am using the exact combination of Madelinetosh light yarn that Robin used. Why? Because Tern is my absolute favorite color and this is not the first piece I have knit in that colorway. Please don't pay attention to how ugly the colors look in my photo - look at the link above. This has been a fun knit and I look forward to blocking it.

I lost my sweet sweet Aunt Ruby last week. She was 91 and up until about 2 years ago, she was fully aware of everything. My Aunt Ruby is the one who got me canning and sewing and I swear my family used to say I was more like her than my mom (at least in the crafty sense). The weekend before she died, I had picked so many tomatoes from my garden. Since I have already canned about 22 quarts and frozen approx. 10 quarts, I did not need to can anymore so I decided to make my Aunt Ruby's salsa. When I spoke with her on the telephone a couple of days later, I was happy to share that with her. I know she heard me. Next weekend I will take my mom to Annapolis so we can attend her memorial service. I loved my Aunt Ruby... She will forever remain in my heart.

Here's hoping all of you have a splendid Labor day and a safe one too! And if you have an "Aunt Ruby" hug her real good...

A little Autumn Flutters

Gosh, I bet most of us would love a little of that Autumn feeling about right now. Just got through watching the news and so many places have had record breaking heat.

Speaking of Autumn, here is a finished photo of Autumn Flutters. Loved this pattern - just like SummerFlies. I knit this with Malabrigo Sock yarn in the Terracotta colorway. I used one full skein and about 1/2 of another. This one is for me. The only change I did is a picot edge instead of pleated edge.

Where have I been? I actually have been up to my eyeballs in textbooks, workbooks, stethoscopes and the like. I have just finished - today actually - a nursing asst. class. This class was great but very accelerated and intense - especially for someone my age! It was a lot of class, then most nights I had 2-3 hours of homework. Written final was yesterday and lab finals today. I passed. Now I am a candidate to take the state test which should be in about 2-3 weeks after I apply. Not a lot of knitting has been done I can promise that. Or sleep for that matter! What will I do with this? I have no clue at the moment but I hope to eventually work in a hospice setting on a part time/as needed basis. We'll see...

The only other thing going on is the PGA golf this coming week - one mile from my home. Directly - straight shot. Do I care? Yes because traffic is going to horrendous.

Tomorrow I am going to my quilt shop for a little fabric therapy... I have 4 quilt tops ready to go to my long arm quilter but haven't had time to get them to her yet. 3 are Halloween ones and one is from an Amy Butler kit I bought over 2 years ago... I'll post soon...

One Charlize, Two Pickle Dishes, Salsa and a baby...

It's that time of year when my hands get twitching to can something. Anything. Little Mommy called me to tell me she made the most awesome Mango Salsa and that our grocery store had mangoes on sale for $1.00 each and we only needed 4-5. Yep, I got the canning bug. So last weekend I put up only a couple of 1/2 pints of Mango salsa and boy is it good. Recipe here: . Also that is a great website to use as a resource if you have questions about canning, water bathing, or pressure canning. This did not require pressure canning (although I can't wait to use my pressure canner again) - I did use it for the water bath.

Then I saw blueberries on sale last weekend. I looked up a couple of recipes for blueberry jam and decided to make some. What I originaly was going to can was Blueberry Syrup which can be used on anything. Well guess what. My jam did not gel like it should have (I used less sugar like the recipe called for) but let me tell you, it is delicious. I now have a blueberry syrup!! Will be great on cereal, oatmeals, cheesecakes, icecream etc. I am more than thrilled with it now.

I finished my Charlize. It is on Ravelry for those on there. Loved it. Will most certainly knit this again. Madelintosh Sock in Logwood, bought at Stitches South. OTN now is : Autumn Flutters . I am knitting in Malabrigo sock in Terracotta which is more like an orange. Love the patterns by Holly and Ella. I will knit Summer Flies again which I knit last fall.

Already in queue is Cambridge by Sunday Knits. This is a brandnew pattern and you can purchase it through Ravelry. I don't see it on her website yet. This is modeled after Princess Kate's Shopping Shawl with the ruffles. I'm not sure about my yarn choice yet. I'm thinking gray alpaca....

In sewing news, I took the Pickle Dish class and loved it. It is so fun but when putting it together, is quite fiddly. It will be a work in progress but I try to do a few every week. I also made Mini Island Boy his own softie blankie out of Minky(ie?) fabric. When I visited him for his first birthday, I noticed he didn't have a softie blankie like Mini Orange Boy does to rub when falling asleep. He does now and Island Girl says he loves it! Now Island Girl says she wants one... I'll be looking for a sale on it.

I leave you with a photo of Mini Orange Boy who was here for about 5 days during the tornados that took out power in the Rocket City. We had so much fun! I know Little Mommy and he were glad to get home but I have never had him for so long and was able to do fun stuff. Train museum, fountain playing, and picnic.

And it is with great gusto that I announce there will be a Micro Mini Orange baby! Yep, Mini Orange Boy is going to be a big brother. We currently believe the baby to be a boy!! One more ultrasound and we will know for sure. Expected November 3rd...

Could I interest you in some felt fruit?

I saw this book and knew I had to have it. After it arrived I read it from front to back. Then I started looking around for some felt - different than the squares you get 4/$1.00 at some of the bigger box stores. Not that there is anything wrong with those, there isn't. But once you sew and play around with the Wool blend felt, there is no comparison. I bought just a couple of sheets from a crafter on Etsy and loved them all. Glorious colors - beautiful to hand sew with.

What I love about these patterns is the fact that a lot of them are halves that you can "put together". Such as the banana, apple and the watermelon. The book tells you how to do all this! Love love love it!

Little Orange Boy (2 in Feb) came to visit and he loves them too! His first pretend food!

I also finished a quilt that I recently gifted to a friend having her second baby, first girl and it's all about pink. I chose these fabrics from Riley Blake Designs and it is the Baby Hip to be Square pattern.

I also decided to do an "I'm One" tshirt for Mini Island Boy who, yes believe it or not, will be One in just a couple of weeks! His theme will be baseball so Little Mommy helped me with some hints on how to make this little tshirt. Tshirt was $4.50 at Target and I couldn't resist the little plaid shorts. It took me less than an hour to sew everything together. He will look adorable! At first I was going to put the "1" beside the baseball but I think it looked better like this.

Oh and one more thing, I am taking my first quilt class Saturday am for the first time in a very long while. My first class ever at Intown Quilters and I couldn't be more excited. It is the Pickle Dish Quilt pattern out of the Kaffe Fassett Quilt Romance book . Here are the fabrics that I will begin using in my quilt - this time all Kaffe fabric scraps. I'll let you know how the class goes. This is actually a paper piece class. The Pickle Dish pattern is the one shown on the front of this book.

So yes, I have been busy. On the Yarn Grove side I have pre-ordered the new Hiya Hiya Bamboo Interchangeables and they will arrive as soon as Hiya Hiya releases them. I don't know an exact date yet. I have started Charlize (on Ravelry for those of you that are) and I am loving it. Using Madelintosh Sock in Logwood (refer to Stitches South staff photo).

Shipwreck(ed) and Yarn fume overload

Today I went to Stitches South. I could hardly contain myself. With project spreadsheet in hand, I felt I wouldn't be AS distracted by the yarn overload. I was wrong. I felt out of control the minute I walked into the center. Glorious yarns... everywhere you looked... I kept telling myself to walk through first - don't buy anything the first go 'round.

I ended up wearing Shipwreck Shawl today and had many many compliments. Most wanted to know what yarn it was - Again Bugga in Sooty Dancer - and why I didn't put beads on it - to which I answered, "I am really not a bead person"... I will most certainly knit this again. Not the best photo in the world but you can see most of the detail against my white shirt.

Happy 1st Birthday X 5!

I just finished these 5 little Cupcake hats for my little Island Boy who will turn one in May and 4 of his little friends who were born close to him. One set of twins. These are so fun and I cannot believe that I have pretty much memorized the pattern. Of course I'm sure the next time I go to make one, I won't remember a thing. That is kinda how it goes with me.

These are all made out of 100% cotton - most scraps I had from other projects. I added "sprinkles" on 3 of these but the yarn on 2 of them put its own sprinkles! Sometimes I use beads but since these are gifts, I didn't want those little tiny beads on there so I used Cotton Floss.

I have had Shipwreck finished for over a month but I just haven't taken the time to block it. It is large... I need to get that blocked before Stitches South!

I am picking up a quilt this afternoon that I finished for a baby shower in April I am going to. I will photo it when I finish the binding.

So much crafting and not enough time! Hope this finds all of you doing what you love best... whatever that may be!

A bit of a Hiatus.

I just wanted to announce that I would be taking a bit of a hiatus from blogging. As you can see, since my last post was December 31, I guess I have already started.

My blog is the one thing that gets pushed to the back of the "to do" list. Yes, I am still knitting but since I am knitting Shipwreck and loving every stitch of it, I don't have a lot to show in photos. It is merely a big blue/black blog. I am using The Sanguine Gryphon's Bugga yarn, my first time with this delectable stuff, and I love it. The challenge for me will be the blocking process. I promise to show photos when I am done.

The Yarn Grove's main focus for 2011 will be Hiya Hiya Needles and accessories. We are fully stocked (at the time of this writing). Check out the new Hiya Hiya Darning Needles (set of 3), the new Needle Grips (for interchangeable tips) . I love all their accessories.

So on with 2011. Hope this new year has started out on a positive and happy note for you. And that it involves lots of fiber both fabric and yarn!

So long 2010...

Rerun of my words... What happened to 2010? Time goes so fast for me and I am a really good time management person. Maybe I am doing too much? Maybe I am measuring my time the wrong way? Whatever the reason, it doesn't change the fact that today is the last day of 2010...

A wonderful Christmas celebration has been going on here. Island Girl, Island Boy and Mini-Island boy have all been here as well as Orange Boy, Little Mommy and Mini Orange boy. We have had so much fun! I love having them all here. The Rocket City crew leaves this morning and the Island Family doesn't leave until Sunday so I get them a little longer.

I made so many of my gifts this year. To sum up, 2 hats, a cowl, 2 pair of fingerless gloves, a shawlette, and a scarf. That was the knitting craft. For the sewing craft, I made 2 quilts, 3 potholders and 2 calendars towels.

Here is a photo of the Sushi Scarf and Malalucie Slouchy Hat I made for Island Girl. They were both fun, fast knits. For the Sushi scarf, I bought the kit from Morehouse Farm and loved it. While the photo showed 5 Sushi Rolls on each end of the scarf, I only made 3 on each end. Why? Because of time! I finished this the night before I wrapped it. For the Malalucie Hat, I used the same yarn she used in the pattern, same color, Malabrigo Worsted. Does Island Girl really need a scarf and hat made from wool? Why yes, when she travels and it does get chilly on the island occasionally. I made knit labels for each knitted garment so the recipient would know how to care for it.

For the calendars, I bought 2 fat quarters of Cynthia F's winning design from Spoonflower. Cynthia F. is the artist who designed my logo for The Yarn Grove. I love everything she does! She is truly amazing. These calendar towels were a hit. I sewed some lovely Kaffe Fassett fabrics on the back. Cynthia submitted this calendar design to Spoonflower for their 2011 calendar challenge and she won! I wasn't surprised. Just check her out. She is a true talent and very easy to work with.

An Island Visit...

On Thursday, I leave for a nice visit to see the Island Family. Mini Island Boy is growing in leaps and bounds and doing great after his preemie birth. Cannot wait to see him. I will actually celebrate Christmas with the Island Family and Orange boy and family just after Christmas when they all come to see us here in GA!

Lots of knitting and sewing projects going on and while some have wrapped up, others are still on the needles. Cannot show them just yet but will post after opening. One is a new project from Morehouse Farms yarns that was sent in their most recent newsletter. I had to knit it and received it yesterday. It is so new that is not even posted, that I can find, on their website. Let's just say, if you like sushi, you will like this.

Today brings lunch with some of my knitting friends and then a trip to Cast On Cottage for their December Open House. I have a pattern I just bought Malalucie Slouch Hat and will buy a nice skein of Malabrigo to knit it. Looks like a quick knit and that is what I am about!

News in the shop... Brand new Hiya Hiya 9" Stainless Steel Circulars in 000 and 00 sizes. You asked for them and Hiya Hiya listened. Also in, these adorable Yarn Ball Markers. On The Yarn Grove home page you will find some ideas for small, thoughtful gifts.

A little mini mochi and lots of canning...

Here is a Tam I knit in Mini Mochi. This was a free pattern with purchase of a skein of mini mochi from Only Ewe and Cotton Too. I actually hope to make it by their shop today.I am on a roll knitting and sewing all kinds of little gifts for my friends and family...

For years I have been canning my own salsa, pickles, applesauce and dilly beans. So it made sense to me that I could can my over abundance of homemade vegetable soup. When I was looking up on the internet how long to process the jars for, everywhere I turned it said NO WATER BATH CANNING - PRESSURE CANNING ONLY. Gee, what to do. I read and researched and read again. I decided not to be afraid of a pressure canner/cooker and give it a whirl. So off I went and found just the canner/cooker for me. A Presto 1745 weighted canner. This is one without the gauge and strictly uses weights. Much cheaper than a gauged dial and from all the reviews I have read, much simpler to use. They weren't kidding. I LOVE IT.

So after assembling my veg soup, I canned it. I put up 4 qts and I am now unstoppable. Fresh green beans were on sale at the market and I bought 2-1/2 lbs. I put up 5 pints of those (pressure canned) and enough left for my soup. Next up... peppers. I am out of control. I have checked several books out of my library and gotten great tips and recipes.

So this week brought a mission for finding Black Mission Figs. Yep, sounds easy? Nope. It wasn't. I needed 3 lbs and finally found just 3 lbs. I made Fig Jam on Tuesday night. Yes, it looks like strawberry jam and tastes a little like it too. The Black Mission Figs are a deep purple/black when ripe. This jam has a distinct earthy taste and I like it. Next time I might try Brown Turkey Figs. We'll see. I put up 15 1/4 pts (4 oz jars) and 2 - 1/2pts. That is a lottttttt of Fig Jam! Great for gifts.

So that is what I have been up too. Trying to finish one more quilt (which I am quilting the top myself).

Not one but Two Hoots...

Finished! Two Spud & Chloe Hoot Hats for my two grandbabies. Mini Island Boy will be here between Christmas and New Year and he will need a warm hat. Mini Orange Boy will be here around the same time so they will have matching hats! This was a super fun, quick and easy knit, made from Spud and Chloe's Outer Yarn.

I have finished 3 more shawlettes and will get those photo'd and up, hopefully this week. In the meantime, I am expecting some restocks of accessories from KA in the shop this week.

OTN, finishing up a mini mochi Tam... Uses one skein but I am holding my breath ...

It's all about fall....

Just a very quick update... I had a great time visiting my family at Island Girl's home. Their home is so lovely and accommodating. Makes one never want to leave! I know I didn't but of course, I had all my kids with me. Back to reality.

And for Mini Island Boy I knit up a quick Pumpkin Hat, all knit in cotton from Peaches N Creme. And I have been making my annual applesauce. Stayman Winesap apples from North GA orchard named Panorama. I put up 23 pints. Last year I had to make the sauce from Pink Ladys because I was too late for Winesap. Never again do I plan on making that mistake! While it was good, the Winesap is the best, in my opinion..

Working on several things for show soon...

Where I'm going, I'll need 'em

Just 2 more days and I'm off to see my mini Island Boy, and the rest of the Island family. Also mini Orange Boy and his parents will arrive later in the week. We will all be together and I cannot wait! Mini Island Boy will be christened on Saturday, October 2nd and I will for sure share photos.

Along with me will go my mom. This is the trip that she and I were taking on May 19th to visit Island Girl and attend her baby shower. But if you recall, Island Girl delivered early so we obviously had canceled that trip. Mom is excited and I knew I had to make her a sun hat. We will have a large celebration at Mini Island Boy's home afterwards which will include lots of sun and swim. So I made her a hat and I honestly couldn't stop making them. They will be available for anyone who would like one at the par-tay. Mine is mixed up in there as well.

As for knitting, I am loving this Summerflies. This is the same one that I saw on Stephanie Japel's website and knew I had to knit it. I am actually using the same yarn and colorway, Madelintosh Pashmina in Tern which I ordered from the fabulous ImaginKnits in San Francisco. My arrived arrived in 2 days. Yes 2 days! No photos yet but this will be finished before I return home. (famous last words).

As for the shop, all orders will not mail until Tuesday, October 5... Look soon for a huge update in your favorite Hiya Hiya needle sizes and accessories. I still have a few ChiocoBag Halloween Bags left...

Some threads, some strings

Yesterday I met the lady who does my long-arm quilting and she handed me back 2 quilt tops I had given her a couple of weeks ago. One is for me and one is a Christmas gift. Please note that I have to add the binding. I do not pay her to do that for me - although she would.

I absolutely love making throw quilts. I make sure they are just big enough to huddle under. These are within 2 inches of each other - one is 59" and one is 61" Both are 42" wide. Just big enough! I usually let the long-armer choose the pattern she thinks is best for each quilt. She told me that the quilts talk to her and tell her what design to put on them and let me tell you, she is spot on. These 2 were way less than $100 for both. Well worth it. And the backs are as nice as the fronts!

The Retro Christmas one I actually finished last year but never got it quilted. It was a kit I got from my LQS (Intown Quilters) . Love the whole 1950-1960's colors and look. This one is mine. The pink one is Hip Baby pattern but I added a panel to make it large enough for my 15 yr old niece who is already 5'10-1/2" tall. This is a gift for her. Also, the photos do not show the genuine rich colors of both of these, but you get the picture ; )

Knitting - yes. My Atlanta Knitting Guild dresses bears and have been doing so since 1980. We can purchase one ourselves or pick up an undressed bear at guild meeting. Currently,AKG donates all the bears to a local child advocacy center where the children are allowed to pick one to take home. I have 2 bears which I am going to dress. This fella told me he needed a vest and scarf. Vest is finished and I gave my mom the task of making his scarf so she could be involved as well.

And because I go see the Island Family in just 2 weeks, where the Orange Boy, mini orange boy and Little Mommy will meet us as well, I decided my 2 little guys needed matching sun hats. I took an old shirt of Orange Boy's which was always one of my favorites and cut it up for the outside but since this is a reversible pattern, I had to put their favorite team fabrics on the other side. Mini Orange Boy is of course the Paws and Mini Island Boy is the "U". These two teams will face off on Oct 2 which just so happens when we will be all together. A fun time for sure! More on that trip later.The pattern I bought on Etsy from tie dye Diva Sewing Patterns. Great one and highly recommend!

So I guess I have been busy! I've now got a sunhat cut out for my mother who will also join me to see the Island Family...

Yes, I am still knitting away on the Koigu Linen Stitch Scarf and I must say that I am enjoying it immensely. The pattern makes it look woven. I know, I can't believe I don't have more finished on it but I am working on other crafty things for Christmas gifts that I can not disclose due to possible recipients reading this blog. So you are currently stuck with looking at my not even 1/2 finished Koigu scarf.

At Noble knitters on Wednesday, there was one knitter, Nancy, who was modeling her finished one. Gorgeous. And Pat, whom I seem to copy a lot, was knitting one in just one colorway. And it was gorgeous. So I don't see how you can go wrong with any combination you would choose.

Tomorrow I leave for a business trip to California and that equates to a 5 hour and 5 minute plane ride that will be dedicated to knitting. I will accidentally/on purpose put my laptop in my suitcase which will be stored above my head in the overhead container. Since I have been diligent about changing my MIDDLE seat ALL weekend, I have just been successful. I am at a window. I prefer aisle but better than having a person on both sides. This plane has 2/3/2 seating... The Yarn Grove will have limited shipping this week but all orders should ship by Thursday, Aug. 26.

A Churchmouse and some Koigu...

I am such a copier sometimes. Or maybe I should just say that I get inspired by other knitters enthusiasm and projects. Yes, that sounds better! Last week at Noble Knitters, there were 3 knitters who had started this Churchmouse Koigu Linen Stitch Scarf pattern. I loved the look of it. The stitch makes the scarf appear to be woven. You choose 3 skeins of Koigu KPPPM in 3 different colorways. It magically looks awesome in many different color combinations.

I went to my local LYS, Cast-on-Cottage this past Monday because I remembered seeing Churchmouse patterns in their shop. They were sold out of them! Arggghhhh. Must be really popular. So I left empty handed, came home and did a search on the internet and found the pattern for a $5.00 download. Tuesday I returned to Cast on Cottage to purchase 3 skeins of Koigu. Last night I cast on for my own linen stitch scarf. I am very excited about this!

This makes 3 projects I have going on at one time. Very unusual for me but I honestly couldn't wait to cast this scarf on. I haven't been this excited about a project in a while... Anyone else knit this?

Puppy Snips

The Puppy Snips from Hiya Hiya have arrived and are stocked up in all colors here at The Yarn Grove . They are so cute, make great gifts and are a for sure knitting bag need!

Weekend is in full swing with lots of knitting going on. And sewing. Finishing a quilt and working on a gift project that I will not be able to show... But trust me, it is divine.

Felt and Fabric

Felt - I am almost finished with this stocking for Mini Island Boy. I just need to add some treasures to the treasure chest (bottom right), stitch his name and put the back on it. Each new member of the family gets one made especially for them. It is entirely hand stitched and I love to make them. My kids have their stockings that are 29 and 31 years old now! Great gifts for babies, newlyweds or just anyone special.

Mini Island Boy is growing nicely. He is 8 weeks old now and progressing along. Island Girl is finally better and off all her meds from the pre-eclampsia. I hope to go back down there in a month!

Mini Orange Boy is great and is almost 18mos old. I am going to the Rocket City this weekend to spend a couple of days with them and I cannot wait!!! It's fun being a grandma (Stephen named me @Gaga@). I just don't like that they both live so far away.

Fabric - I have finished the Spider Web quilt and love the results. I will send this off to a longarm quilter next week. The challenge on this quilt was the actual sewing together of the horizontal rows but I finally finished. I will take a better photo of this as well.

Lots going on in the Shop. Nature's Palette just arrived and I know it is a lot of your favorite yarn. Dyed from Nature - lots and lots of great colors are here now.

A little beret...

When I went to see Island Girl and family, I took my knitting of course. I finished a mini beret for mini Island Boy but since he is a preemie, it is still too big. I made it out of Debbie Bliss cotton (I don't remember the exact yarn name) and made it stripes. The pattern is Woolley Wormhead Baby Rollin' Beret and it is the second one I have knit. I love Woolley's hats and have purchased several of her patterns. They are fun knits.

Mini Island Boy is growing nicely. He weighed in at an amazing 7#12oz last week and that is quite a feat for a little guy who isn't even supposed to be here for another 2 weeks. Island Girl is progressing nicely from her pre-eclampsia and is almost off all the blood pressure meds. What a horrible disease. Island Boy has settled into his role as daddy very proudly. I came home after 12 days with them.

I am expecting the new Hiya Hiya Large Interchangeable needle sets in the shop most any day. I also expect them to go very fast but will have more on order..

As for my vegetable garden, it is doing okay. The tomatoes seem to be suffering from something, the leaves are all curling up. But the zucchini in my garden is the size of a submarine. I have never seen such large zucchini in my life. I blanched and froze some the other day and I guess I will also make some zucchini bread.

That's about it for now. Also I am happy to report I have finally finished my 2009 family scrapbook as of this afternoon. So many crafts and not enough hours in my day!

Hudson, my newest grandbaby, aka. Mini Island Boy, entered the world at 33 weeks and 6 days (I have learned that every single day makes a huge difference in the womb) on May 19 at 9:35am. He weighed in at 5.6# and 18-3/4" long. He is in the NIC-U and his mommy is keeping him company at the same hospital. Island Girl has not been released yet due to the pre-eclampsia, and it doesn't look like she will be discharged today either.

Mommy and baby are progressing well. Mommy and Daddy are glowing... The photo of baby Hudson here is he is attempting his first bottle in the NIC-U!

So originally I was going to be out from last Wed through today, taking my mom with me to see Island Girl and Island Boy and going to their baby shower on the 22nd. But instead Island Girl was flown to the mainland on the 16th in hopes of prolonging his stay in her womb but she was getting sicker from this pre-eclampsia.

Thank you to all my customers for understanding the wacky shipping schedule I had to change to. I hope to get all orders out today and tomorrow. Itty Bitty needles and knitting

Once again, I want to spotlight Gill from the UK. Gill buys her Hiya Hiya needles from me for all the doll clothes she knits. Her knits are amazing.

I knit with 2/28 cashmere lace yarn. I just love to knit and the smaller the better.

The most important thing to me is to keep it in scale for the doll I am knitting for. I usually do my own designs bit I think the ones I sent through to you are all from Dollswest Designs, a lady called Cynthia from the US. Sometimes it is nice just to sit down with a pattern that someone else has done.

I swear by those needles now that I have found them but confess that I use them like straight pins!

Glorious Yarns and fabrics weekend...

Little Mommy and I went to Stitches South yesterday. We arrived, bought our tickets and stood in line for a very loooonnng 11 minutes. There was much joy and excitement in the air.

Our plan of action was to move through all the booths, scope out new projects for ourselves and any yarns that may be contenders for our knittings. Little Mommy had a 3-ring binder of a few patterns she wanted to knit.

Last year I bought yarn because I loved it OR I told myself I could always make socks from it. This year was very different for me. I had projects listed, yardage, recommended yarns, etc. I felt very organized and I vowed not to wake up in the morning with buyer's remorse.

After trapsing through the booths ( and there might have been a little squealing too) for a couple of hours, Little Mommy and I circled back around to the concession stand and had a sandwich for lunch at which time we regrouped. We went through our lists, talked about yarns, deals, etc. Off we went again.

I shopped this one booth 3 times - I loved their yarn and prices. It was Unwind Knit from Rhode Island. Nice ladies, and since I was their first customer of the morning, I got 25% off my purchase!! They had posted on Ravelry some morning specials for Saturday.

I came away from Stitches South very satisfied and felt I made good choices. Little Mommy purchased some great Pima Cottons for a shirt for herself and a sweater for Mini Orange- Boy. Below is my haul.

Bottom Right: Madelinetosh DK in Parchment (4 skeins) and I know this will become something that was on my spreadsheet but I cannot remember at the moment. The yarn fumes are pouring out of my shopping bags currently.

Prior to Saturday's excursion to Stitches South, Little Mommy and I went to Intown quilters where we had a blast looking at all their fabrics. While this is my exclusive go-to quilt shop, LM had not been there to really look around. Since she makes little girl clothes and sells on Etsy (elevendytoo), she was in her glory. We came away with some new fab fabrics! (Fabric line on top is for a throw quilt for my 14 yr old niece for Christmas) Bottom 2 blocks are for the quilt I am working on now... Caught in a Spider web.

What a great weekend. I have so many craftys that I want to do, my head is spinning. First I will finish the Daybreak shawl I have on my needles and for sewing, I will finish my Island Quilt for my room at Island Girl and Boy's home... You may not hear from me for a while... I am on the countdown for Stitches South beginning Thursday here in the ATL! If I sound a little excited, it's because I am. My first class is on Thursday, Switching to Continential by Lesley Solomon.

Little Mommy, aka Cheryl, will be coming to town, along with Orange Boy and Mini-Orange boy and I couldn't be happier. Actually I just spent a great weekend in the Rocket City with them this past weekend...

Sorry, no photos and no knitting projects to show, yet. I have my spreadsheet with projects I want to do with yardage requirements, etc. so I am not completely overwhelmed like last year. Once you walk in the convention center, I am overcome with yarn fumes and hit the ground with a huge smile on my face.

Retail Therapy

I have returned to the Mainland. I had a great visit with my Island Girl and Boy, and in case I forgot to tell you, a mini-Island Boy in the works! Their first baby is due around June and I could not be more excited to have Grandson #2!!

When I returned last weekend, I needed some fabric retail therapy. So off I went to my favorite In-Town Quilters on Sunday which actually happened to be Shop Hop weekend. I picked up a pattern book called Sizzlin' Sixties and I shall embark in the Caught in a Web pattern. When done in these colorways, picked by the ever talented staff at In-Town, it is so cool looking. I usually steer away from triangles, etc. when quilting because frankly I don't enjoy it. But I have been looking at their sample quilt and decided the colors, design would be perfect for my bedroom at Island Girl/Boy's home. My furniture is white wicker there and this will really make the walls pop.

Also on Thursday, before I left, the Sewing Expo was in town for their annual show. I was in desperate need of a new cutting mat since I had accidentally let my mini iron touch it, more than a couple of times. So I was thrilled to see my favorite manufacturer there and purchased a new mat. Not only is it a mat but I bought the mat with turntable as well. Now instead of moving my stacks of fabric around to be cut, I can just spin the turntable! I am so excited to try it out.

In knitting news, a huge order of Hiya Hiya needles are scheduled to arrive today so check back at The Yarn Grove if you have been waiting for your size to come in.

I just finished Saroyan and it will be on the blocking board today. I loved this pattern and it is a free pattern. It was a fun knit. So I sat for a while last night before going to knit group and decided my next shawl project would be Daybreak. I had started this knit once before and couldn't get the hang of the beginning and I found out last night why. I wasn't paying attention. So my dear pal, Pat, sat so patiently with me and helped. So off I go. Thanks Pat!!

First things first, Happy Birthday to my Island Girl!

Yes indeed, once again I am off this mainland to visit Island Girl and Island Boy so I wanted to let you all know that any orders received after 5:00pm on Thursday, March 11 will not be mailed until Monday, March 22. I have been plagued with some respiratory crud for almost 2 weeks now. Even 2 doctor visits. Yesterday, I got an inhaler and in all my years have never used one. But I sure did last night. So I am ready for some warm weather and hopefully the island will oblige.

I've been knitting away on my Saroyan and would already have it done except I was going to increase the number of leaves and after I did that on the increase section, I realized that I would probably run out of yarn before I finished the decrease round. So I tinked it back and am going with the traditional pattern.

In other craftiness, I am almost ready to put the binding on a baby quilt. This pattern is called Hip Baby and was a lot of fun.

Blocking issues

I have finished my first 10 in 2010 shawls (Ravelry) and to recap it is Simple Things shawl. I used 24" Hiya Hiya needles, bamboo in a size 4 and BMFA Socks that Rock in a mill end. No idea of the color name. The photo of it is washed out but it is a gorgeous deep velvety purple.

I soaked this little shawl in warm water and then got out my brand new "blocking mats" . I used about 1,000 pins (that is for drama) and blocked it on my large quilting table. Ummm, in looking at the photo of it here, it looks a little catty-wonked. Oh well, when it is dry, I will steam it with my magic steamer.All in all, I was pleased how it came out.

I need to read up on blocking because surely there is a trick to it. I'll have to ask my group tonight at Noble Knitters.

I had a wonderful time in the Rocket City celebrating mini Orange Boy's first birthday. Here he is modeling his cupcake hat. Quick, take a photo (which I had to do several times) because as soon as we put it on his head, off it came! He thought it was funny when his daddy (Orange Boy) put it on.

Little Mommy made him his own special "1" birthday shirt. It was so adorable. She continues to amaze me with all her craftyness!

Also Orange Boy, on FB, put up random photos for 31 days straight along with a blurb about each one, representing mini Orange Boy's first 365 days. He then uploaded to one of those photo places and had a book made. I ordered my own and it came yesterday! He did an amazing job and all I can say is: EVERYONE, get your photos off the computer and into digital books, scrapbooks or somewhere! On Saturday, I will be spending all day at a local hotel for a scrapbook convention. Cannot wait...

Now, I am on to yet another shawl, this one is called Saroyan. I am using yarn from Karabella, Aurora 8 and actually I believe this is only one of a handful of times I have ever used black yarn. I think I am really going to like this pattern. Again, all the cobwebs and windows that need cleaning are the fault of Woofgangpug . Diana made me drink the frappacino that night at NK....

Sweetness for my sweetie...

Yes, I have been knitting. I get inspired by all the knitters around me at my Wednesday night Noble Knitters group. So last week, Debra was knitting on a cupcake hat she had to finish in 2 days for a baby shower. So I asked myself the next day, why am I not knitting my Stephen a cupcake hat for his first birthday?

And so it began. First to find the pattern on the internet. Then go to my stash and I found some acrylic/cotton blend yarns that I thought would do the trick. And of course, I had to add "sprinkles" to mini Orange Boy's hat. He got lots of sprinkles. While at first it looked a little girlish, the white nubbies on there are part of the icing. Hey, he probably won't even have it on for a minute. Just need a photo, that's all!

And so I continue to be inspired by my Noble Knitters group, this time by the Woofgangpug , otherwise known as Diana. She, Ellen, Debra, Pat and possibly others from our Noble Knitters, have joined this group on Ravelry namely 10 shawls in 2010. When I saw that a lot of the patterns people were knitting only consisted of one skein of yarn, I knew I was in. My first one is Simple Shawls which can be purchased on Ravelry. I already have 4 or 5 other ones lined up, along with their chosen yarns, and can't wait to start another one! I'll keep ya'll posted on my progress. Here is a picture of the shawl in progress in Blue Moon Fiber Arts, Mill Ends that Debra taunted me with at NK. I also think that I can blame Diana for the unfinished baby quilt I have in progress too. All because of this 10 in 10.

In the meantime, Baby Owl sweater is resting. I also finished the border on a baby blanket my mother knit and will post a photo of that later.

I'm off to the Rocket City tomorrow (weather permitting) to celebrate mini Orange Boy's (11th) and Orange Boy's (14th) birthdays. I cannot wait to see Cheryl as well but hey, once you have a baby who do Gammaw's really want to get their hands on?

Left, now right...

I finished the left side of the Owl sweater, now on to the right which I had 1/4 of the way done and then when I looked at it last night I realized I had not done the garter stitch for the front where the buttonholes are made. I thought something looked strange, so I ripped it down to the ribbing and then all the way out. So tonight, I begin the right side again. Then the sleeves, etc. etc. I really love this pattern... I would already have it done if I wasn't working on a couple of other projects at the same time.

One of those being a little baby blanket that my mom knit and I am putting the border around it for her. I'll post photos when I am done. It is actually a little car seat blanket, so cute! And my mom's grey top down sweater which is my take along project and it seems that the sleeves will never be long enough! Oh well, she is always cold it seems, so whenever I finish it, she will wear it.

And I am working on a quilt for which I debuted the fabric for. It is a pattern called "Hip Baby" and you basically work 5 different patterns from 9 different fabrics. It has been fun and I am on the last set of blocks. Then I'll begin putting it together. I am in love with these little owls...

In Shop News: Just in more of the little Hiya Hiya Dumplings with the yarn ball markers. I can't tell you enough how adorable these things are. All kinds of colors, including pink this time!

Also just in, Hiya Hiya small Interchangeable needles with the 5" tips. Along with this shipment I received lots of cables and tips for your interchangeable sets. Love these needles. They are great.

Just counting down until I go see my little Stephen who will be one year old in 2 weeks! He is so precious...

I am really enjoying knitting on this little Baby Owl Sweater. If you recall, I started it a while ago, but am finally able to show some progress. Tonight will finish the other shoulder and on to the sleeves/fronts. Love this pattern, love this yarn! Dale of Norway, Baby Ull - great colors, fantastic stitch definition.

Who is it for? I have no idea. But I wanted to knit it ever since my buddy, Pat, from Noble Knitters had knit it for a client of hers and I am enjoying every stitch in it. Buttons will go on the little Owl's face with black thread so you can see the eyes.

Also I am starting a new quilt for a baby boy. Picked out some great fabrics at Intown Quilters on Saturday. Spent way too much time in there but had a blast, as always. Love that store.... They have a great blog and give away stuff all the time. I just recently won 5 fat quarters so if you are a fabric crafter, head to their blog!

Patiently waiting on the new Hiya Hiya Interchangeable Needles in the larger sizes. Wonderful product... I'll let you know when I get them in the shop...

A new year and a new decade. Wow. Time just zips by.

I had a glorious Christmas with all my kids. My only complaint is it went too fast but I already have some trips planned to go to the Orange family and Island kids.

I made a lot of my gifts this year so now I can show some of them.

Aprons sewn for the gals,

mini kleenex holders with caribeners so they can clip them in their purses;

hand embroidered kitchen towels for each - a Kitty theme from Sublime Stitching (so much fun and fast. You should try it)

and Recipe card sets of all their favorite recipes throughout the years. I took a class from Archiver's store back in November and had to make two. It took me about 3 full weeks of working on them little by little to finish but it was well worth it. Both sets of kids LOVED it. Again, it is all their favorite recipes and now they have them at their fingertips...

For the guys, little elf ornaments but I failed to take a photo of one who was knit in Island Boy's favorite NCAA football team. Here is one that I knit for Orange Boy who likes BMarley. I do not even remember where I got the pattern but I think it was on a yahoo! group for quick gifts I had found. Anyway, Orange Boy loved it; complete with dreads!

Now for my new knitting project. Yes, I am still working on the top down sweater I started several months ago and just have the two sleeves left now. But at Knit night a couple of weeks ago, Pat, who is an awesome knitter, had been commissioned to knit a customer a vintage baby sweater. Oh my gosh, it was the cutest thing and because I love owls and birds so much, I knew I had to hunt the pattern down.

It is a Penny Straker pattern and I found them in stock at Dublin Bay Knitting Company and bought two patterns and also yarn. The yarn I chose is Dale of Norway, Baby Ull in a cream color but they have lots of different colors. Dublin Bay Knitting - great online shop and super fast service! So I got out my #1 and #2 straight needles and have already started. I even swatched! But didn't make any adjustments because it is a cardigan so this one will be a little larger than a 6 month size. I don't know if I will make the matching bonnet or not. I LOVE tiny needles and skinny yarn!

So I am happy to start the new year with a new project! Hope your New Year is off to a crafty start...

Little Dumplings...

I just had to post about these new Dumplings from Hiya Hiya that we have just received. They are so functional. Small yet able to hold all those tiny stitch markers that I am never able to find in my knitting bag. Squeeze the two ends and it opens. The Dumplings are approximately 3 inches long and 1-3/4" at the widest part, perfect for storing your stitch markers or small gifts.

Also included with the Dumplings are the neatest yarn ball stitch markers, set of 6. Perhaps some of you who are in the Hiya Hiya Ravelry group will remember when Qianer was designing these and asking for our opinions. They are lightweight and fit up to a US size 8 (5mm). A couple of extra rings are included for larger sizes to a US 15(10mm). For only $10.00, these Dumplings are a wonderful addition to your knitting accessories.

Also just in to The Yarn Grove are the long awaited Hiya Hiya Needle Gauges. I have had these on back order for literally months and they have finally arrived. Measuring from needles from a US 000-000 (.7mm) to a US 15 (10mm) these are also a must have, especially if you use the micro sized needles.

I am ready for Christmas. My gift this year is Island Girl and Boy, Cheryl, Orange Boy and mini Orange Boy are all coming here this year. We will celebrate a day or two after Christmas but that's okay.

Speaking of gifts, if any of you need last minute gift ideas and don't know what to get that "person who has everything", give a monetary gift to a charity in his/her honor. There are so many in need this year... Or better yet, volunteer your time...

These photos are from Judy of CA who so graciously allowed me to share them on my blog. She purchased some micro sized Hiya Hiya Needles and over Thanksgiving knit this adorable Octopus. The pattern is by Hansi Singh, you can find more info re: her on Ravelry. She has lots of sea creature patterns and even a book out. Thank you Judy!

I am done with gift shopping and I took the last gift off the needles this weekend. It is a cowl for my mom and I know she will love it. It is made from Cheryl B Design hand dyed yarn (Malabrigo base) and a dream to work with. The pattern is the same one I did for Cheryl's cowl, yes it is okay for me to mention because if you refer to my post of November 2nd, you will recall she found it before I got it wrapped. And is loving it, I might add.

The great thing for me about finishing a project is starting another one. I'm struggling with that decision right now. Perhaps another shawl. I am working on one that is nothing but garter stitch that accompanies me to doctor visits and Noble Knitters.

I had a visitor in my backyard the other day. Not unusual at all to see such creatures - we have many. But he was fascinating to watch. He perched on that pole for at least 5 minutes - just waiting for something to move. You could almost hear a pin drop out in those woods! "No one" made a peep. He finally swooped down on something and then took off. I'm not exactly sure what hawk he is but possibly a Cooper's Hawk? Orange Boy, Island Girl, anyone, anyone?

Good Clean Fun

I was reading an article in my favorite non-knitting magazine the other day, that suggested giving felted soap as a holiday gift for only $15.
$15????
Oh no way. We are making some. Go get a bar of soap right now. Go on...you know you have some hotel soap somewhere in your bathroom- now go get it! You will also need a little wool roving.

1. Gather supplies-
1 bar soap (don't forget to check that its cruelty free!), a few pinches of wool roving in your favorite colors, a large bowl of warm H2O, and Christmas music (optional, but highly recommended)

2. Wrap wool around bar of soap, both lengthwise and widthwise. Gently drip some water onto the wool to help it stick. Begin patting the wool, adding more water as you go.

3. Drip, pat, drip, pat, drip and pat until the wool begins to felt and you can start running your hands over and over the soap. More water, more rubbing, more suds, more Christmas music. (Make sure the entire bar is covered in wool. Add more if needed.)

4. Keep going and going, there will be lots of suds. Once your wool is good n' felted, set bar aside to dry.

Use in the shower as a gentle scrubby or place in the powder room for guests. Or stuff those stockings (for way less than $15, thank you very much.)

I'd like to know if you could use felting yarn for this project. Someone figure it out and report back to me.

Tiny Knitting

Since the opening of The Yarn Grove, over 4 years ago, one of my greatest joys has been the friendships of people I have met through orders, emails and in person.

One of my new friends is Gill from the UK. And with her permission, I wanted to show you these doll sweaters that she is knitting. She bought several Hiya Hiya needles and knit these sweaters for the dolls which are 10", 13" and 14". These sweaters were knit on 3-0 and 2-0 needles using lace weight yarn.

Gill says she is always knitting - always. She loves collecting dolls, bears and such and you can see this love come through on her website bygill.com . Take a look at some of these tiny knits for these dolls she has done! Amazing and inspiring...

Gill also has begun selling her items such as this adorable Newborn boy outfit. Gorgeous knitting and sure to be an heirloom. I know I still have my kids special outfits that were handknit and crocheted many many years ago.

I hope to have all my needle backorders from Hiya Hiya in here within the next 10 days. So if you are waiting on certain sizes and have emailed me, rest assured your needles should arrive soon and I will be contacting you.

I saw these adorable bird nest ornament kits by Marie Mayhew Designs. I found them at the Yarnery . I bought one full kit which included the pattern and also a card explaining about the German tradition of having a bird nest in your Christmas tree. I then purchased another kit which had enough "stuff" in it for 5 other ornaments. I made a total of 5 so far, two have already found new homes and these three are already gifts for family. Since I make sure all orders from The Yarn Grove get shipped very fast, I was pleased The Yarnery provided excellent and fast service. I have ordered another refill kit.

In other news, I made a trip to North Georgia mountains a couple of weeks ago to get my annual apples for pies and applesauce. Especially now for my grandbaby, Stephen, who loves Gammaw's applesauce. When I got to the orchard, they were OUT, yes OUT of Stayman Winesap. I always use these apples for my pies and sauce. They had sold completely out of them the week before. My choices now were slim. But alas, I tasted the Pink Lady apples and they would have to do. One bushel later and I had about 9 gallons of apple pie fixin's and about 9 pints of sauce. I do not add anything at all to my sauce. All natural and delish. Next year, I will go the first week of October instead of the last...

Hope this finds you all knitting away on holiday gifts. I cannot believe it is already the fifteenth of November.

Cowls and Owls

Its getting chilly (even in the south) so its time to break out the scarves...or for me, the cowls- my new "it" piece for the winter. I talk like I'm really fashionable, but don't be fooled. My main accessory is usually drool, applesauce or a combination. Cowls are great to cover applesauce stains.

Here is a picture of 2 cowls I made with some fabulous handspun and also the foiled Christmas gift. It really wasn't my fault! It was sitting in clear view and you would have picked it up too!

And here's a picture of my owl on Halloween. It was way past bedtime and we had just gotten home from going to a Clemson game in the rain. We went to 4 houses, took some pictures and then put him straight to bed. Then Chris and I ate his candy. What! Babies can't have candy!
Currently working on a baby sweater for my favorite baby girl, Katie Lane. Will post soon.

I've been visiting Island Girl and Island Boy - so that is where I have been, in case there was wondering. We had a marvelous time and once again, I hated to leave. Weather was hot but the breezes were delightful...

When I visited Cheryl in October, she showed me some cowls she was making. I loved them. So many options. So I got on Ravelry and started looking up some patterns. I printed a couple off and decided who I would knit them for. I made a list of yarns that I would like to use and off I went on the Yarn Shop Hop Weekend - Oct. 10 to support my local LYS(s).

For Cheryl's, I chose Malabrigo Worsted in Lavanda in this Quickie Cowl pattern. For another one (recipient shall remain nameless) I chose Alpaca with a Twist Highlander yarn and this Cowl'd and Frosty Morning pattern. Love this yarn. Love the tweed (see photo).

As I finish a gift or two of knitting or sewing, I have a special place I put them. Well, Cheryl's cowl had just finished blocking this past week and she, Orange Boy and Stephen came for a visit. I hid (I thought) her finished cowl under a bag of yarn that was "scheduled" to go into its place of gift waiting honor. She somehow looked at the bag of yarn and then saw this scrumptious Malabrigo Cowl and pulled it out. She liked it. I was glad. She is wearing it now. It looks great on her and maybe Orange Boy and get a photo of it for me. I never even had time for that!

Mini Orange Boy Hat

I got inspired to knit little Stephen a hat from a gal in my Noble Knitters group a couple of weeks ago. She was knitting a little hat with ear flaps, so I came home and found an adorable earflap hat from Woolly Wormhead - Wee Woolly Toppers. This electronic booklet is full of the cutest hats and I am happy to have it in my pattern collection - it was worth every cent.

I chose Cheryl B. Design Sport weight and doubled it. I used about 300 yards total in the special colorway: Orange Boy. I spent 3 glorious days recently with Cheryl, Orange Boy and Stephen and gave him his hat. He clearly loved it. Especially pulling it off!

We are busy here at The Yarn Grove. Lots of Hiya Hiya needles and more interchangeables on the way shortly.

One Tawashi, Two Tawashi

I have always had a long love affair with all things cotton for the kitchen and bath. Handmade dishcloths, washcloths, scrubbers - you name it. And I am in a group on Ravelry namely Tawashi Town. What is a Tawashi? Japanese translation: Scrubbie. A lot of Tawashi(s) are made with acrylic for the scubbing effect. The fish above was made with cheap acrylic and the citrus circle was made with cotton. I really prefer the cotton but I guess it is a personal preference.

I finally replenished our firewood supply. While I have enough fallen trees way in the forest here, they are mostly pine. I found a terrific supplier on Craig's List and ended up getting this gorgeous red and white oak for a great price.

Pickles were on the agenda for last weekend and pickles I did. My old stand by that everyone loves in this house - bread and butter. I will be sending a small arsenal to Island Boy who dearly loves them. It seems, however, my brain got a little confused on the amount of vinegar. I use 1/2 white and 1/2 cider vinegar so when it said 2 cups (use 1/2 and 1/2 if desired) I gave it 2 cups of white and 2 cups of cider. Whew. Those were stout! I had already canned 6 pints before I realized my mistake. I drained 4 of those pints and re-canned with the correct mixture. My mom loved the extra vinegar so she can have 2 jars.

And I leave you with my favorite face ... I think he looks adorable in green spinach...

Yay! my BFF Rebecca ( remember her story?) delivered a (tiny, but) healthy girl yesterday. Katie Lane is 4 lbs, 13 oz, 18 in long, but she's eating like a champion, and she's quite spunky, pee peeing on her Daddy this morning! Here are some baby booties I made for her precious feet.
Pattern is Saartjes Booties knit with yarn dyed by moi.

I have a few more items in the works- a cardigan I'm attempting to design, a hat for the little man, a tutu for Katie Lane and lots of scarves. I manage to knit a few rows during each of Stephen's four 25 minute naps. Speaking of the little booger, I hear him now...

The much anticipated Opal Rainforest 5 has arrived to The Yarn Grove, with some fun names, I might add. How about Edward the Pool Attendant? or Johnny the Airship Captain. This collection features endangered creatures and Opal donates proceeds from the sale of this yarn to foundations that save habitat from development and clear-cutting.

For some reason, I can't seem to get any projects finished. I have 2 knitting projects going, a quilt in progress and a Christmas stocking. Time just keeps zippin' by and here it is almost the first of September! Wow.

I hope to post a photo of a special project I have just completed that is a gift for someone.

I had the best long weekend. First to the Rocket City last Wed., then Island Girl flew into the RC and we had a glorious time together. Stephen, Island Girl, Orange Boy and Little Mommy (aka Cheryl). Time went fast and furious but we had a blast. It was so good to see them all! It would have been complete if Island Boy could have been there too.

Little Stephen is now 6 months old and absolutely adorable. Such a little personality. He laughs all the time and is such a happy baby. He sure keeps Little Mommy busy all day!

Hiya Hiya Interchangeable Needle sets were a huge hit and I knew they would be. However, I have lots more on order and hope to have those within about 4-6 weeks. In the meantime, I do have lots of sizes in stock - both in bamboo and stainless steel. Stay tuned for some great Opal sock yarns!

Here is the progress I am making on the AKG mystery stole that I talked about in an earlier post. Love the pattern and love this gorgeous Classic Elite Silky Alpaca yarn I am using. It is a delight. You can't really see the beads on here (we're having an overcast day here in the south) so the photo is not very good.

Just returned from a business trip to CA. Long flight, long days and so glad to be home. Hopefully my "part-time" work will ease up in the next couple of weeks.

In other happy news, Island Girl is coming to visit! She will go to the Rocket City first where I will pick her up after a visit with my precious Stephen. (In this photo, he is very pouty when he found out he had to wait another week for Gammaw. ) Then to GA for a couple of days. Sadly, Island Boy will not be able to join this trip because of work conflict.

Other fun news, Island Girl is back knitting again and I hope she will join Cheryl and I on the blog. Can't wait to see what she has been working on...

Still waiting on the Hiya Hiya Interchangeables and it looks like my original order is already sold out. I'll let everyone know.

My forecast for the week ahead holds a dentist appt. I think I cracked a tooth. I have a phobia for the dentist and my stomach hurts already just thinking about it...

Up to my eyes in ... a lot

I cannot believe the last time I posted was over 2 weeks ago. Yep, time sure flies when one is busy. Besides trying to keep up with my garden I have had a lot of other deadlines as well.

First I finished 2 baby quilts and mailed those off. Here is a photo of one of them - almost done. (Binding was still hanging on). Then I made a beautiful quilt (of which I did not take a photo because I literally finished it late one night and mailed it the next morning) for a friend of my mom's (also a friend of mine) for a special birthday. I put some embroidery squares on it as well that pertained to her life. Like she is a nurse, the Netherlands flag (where she was born) and various other stitchy things. She loved it.

Oh and there is knitting too. I am still chugging along on the top down sweater and I love it.

The pattern is from Kntting Pure and Simple #221 Summer Cardigan (take a minute to look over her patterns. Love them all). The yarn I am using is Zara 100%Merino wool in a gorgeous gray color. I think I will make this for my mom but bought extra so I can make longer sleeves. This is the project that goes with me on my many airplane trips recently. Love all of Diane's patterns.

And speaking of travel, I am leaving yet again for California a week from tomorrow (the 27th) for a corporate business trip. But before that, I am truly hoping to have lots of Hiya Hiya Interchangeable needles in the shop! I know many of you are on my original "I want one list" from many months ago and once that list is fulfilled, I will list the others on The Yarn Grove. So stay tuned!

WWKIP day and other stuffs...

Nothing like being a little behind blogging but here is a photo of just a few of our Noble Knitters on WWKIP day. We went to our usual hangout and knit. It was a fun day - a little steamy outside - but fun none the less. There were a total of perhaps 15 of us and we broke up into smaller knitting groups after dining on a wonderful lunch together. Here is a photo of some of us - I am second from the left - and we were all wearing our Noble Knitter T-shirts.

Not only am I behind in my blogging but also housework, gardening and just plain everyday stuff. I have been traveling for 2 weeks with my corporate job. I only work a few hours a month but was needed for a project, so off I went. I did get a lot of knitting done on the flights so that was nice. I am working on a top down sweater. It is the gray heathered one in the photo.

Last month at our Knitting Guild meeting, Deborah Fillmer aka The Nautical Knitter came to speak to us about the world of KAL's. I have been in her Secret of the Stole groups before and thoroughly enjoyed it. She is a delightful and charming lady. Deborah has designed a Secret KAL for our knitting guild members only so I decided to venture out on Saturday in search of the perfect yarn. I ended up with Classic Elite Silky Alpaca Laceweight in a topaz/orangey color from one of my LYS, Cast on Cottage . The KAL calls for beads and I chose some beads that are 2 tone - pink with topaz on the ends. I am still not sure how I like the 2 of them together (I bought the beads first) but so far I think I do. We'll see. Haven't even had time to do a swatch. In fact, I haven't been able to pick up my sticks since I flew home late Thurs. night.

The first weekend I came home after traveling, Orange Boy, Cheryl and Stephen were here to visit Gammaw. We had a wonderful weekend together. His personality is really coming through at 4-1/2 months.

And my garden has exploded whilst I was gone. Including weeds. So yesterday I spent pulling weeds, picking beans, jalapeno peppers, tomatoes and cukes. (the photo shows the first trip to the garden's loot). The beans I blanched and froze; the jalapenos I just froze so they will be readily available when I get ready to make my annual batch of salsa and the tomatoes I put in hot water, peeled the skins and chopped them up. Next was the freezer bags and I was able to get 4 full quarts of tomatoes for winter consumption. There will be lots more soon.

I hope you all have a happy and safe 4th of July celebration. Hub and I are going to visit Island Girl so the shop shipping (say that 3 times) will cease on Wed. July 1 and begin again on Tuesday, July 7. As always, The Yarn Grove is open 24/7 for your shopping pleasure!

One twisted braid...

I'm done. Here is a photo of my Twisted Braid Wrap from SWTC in their Therapi yarn. I saw a lady at Stitches South when I was working the AKG booth and commented on it. Had to have it. Went and bought the kit and chose this gorgeous (this photo was taken when we were having terrible t'storms) color in a gray/green. It was an easy knit and I believe the pattern is available for sale on Ravelry. I will certainly do this one again but in a 100% wool so there is a little more stretch. Thanks Mom for modeling... She has claimed all rights to this!

I hope a lot of you have been able to view the video/story that Cheryl linked up on the blog on June 3rd. It is truly an amazing story that started with a simple request. Maybe some of you American Idol followers remember her from a couple of seasons ago. I believe it was Season 5 (Cheryl please correct me if I am wrong). Her voice is incredible and most especially she is a beautiful person. Cheryl is the very pregnant one - this was filmed before my precious Stephen was born.

Don't forget Saturday, June 13 is Knit In Public day. Noble Knitters, my Wed. night group, are going to spread all over the Forum on various benches scattered throughout this quaint outside shopping center. B&N is there where we meet in the cafe every Wed night. It will be fun. Anyone in the area, stop by to join us.

Hey everybody. I'm alive! I haven't been swallowed by diapers, spit up and laundry (yet). Stephen is 3 months old and life is good. He is napping regularly and sleeping 5 hours most nights. YAY!! As soon as I start knitting again, I'll post some pictures. Until then, here's a picture of the little man.

Key Shawl

So it's finished. My Key Shawl. I mean when you live on an island, why would you need a full sweater? Most of the time you don't so I jumped all over this adorable pattern at the local yarn shop. I will say that I did not knit the actual pattern stitch - just stockinette. Why you ask? Because I needed something to carry with me to all the doctor appts. I take my mom to. Sometimes I can wait for up to 5 hours and it keeps me occupied. When you go as frequently as we do, all the magazines have been read!

I call this my "fake" sweater. It only has a back, no sides and gives the illusion of having sleeves that you tie in the front (as if you were wrapping a sweater over your shoulders). Love it. Just the thing to throw over an outfit. Oh, and the yarn was Karabella Aurora 4 and I don't remember the color number. And I see I already have a pick on it that needs fixin'.

As most of my knitting friends know, I only knit from the toe up. It is the way I learned to knit socks from the Sock Knitting Queen herself, Zina several years ago. I have never witnessed any knitter turn out more pairs of socks than Zina. She is amazing.

Also, most of my knitting friends know that I cannot knit anything without a pattern. So most of my toe up socks have been straight knitting and that has kept me pretty satisfied. When I heard Wendy Johnson was coming out with a Toe up Sock book, I could not have been more excited. And it arrived today!

I am currently blocking the body of my Key Shawl (more on that later) and am getting ready to begin the final section of it. My goal is to have it finished by Stitches South which is rapidly arriving !

I have finished all my kudzu for Stitches South. Why did I choose to knit kudzu? It is a southern thing. Kudzu is everywhere here. I cannot wait to see all the finished items we have made for the centerpieces at SS.

Little Stephen

Here is a photo of my new grandbaby, Stephen. I was with him for 4 days this past week and he and I had so much fun. Especially the night time feedings. I tried to give mommy and orange boy a break. He is so precious... I miss him already! These are actually older photos of him because Gammaw forgot her camera...

I did get a little knitting done on my Malabrigo sock which I bragged would be done during my visit with Island Girl but that didn't happen either... And I started another project which is fun and will show that soon...

It is snowing here in the south today and all I can say is .... Yippee! I'm leaving to go visit Island Girl!! Can't wait. I leave before dawn on Tuesday and this is my first direct flight there. All other trips I have made have had various connecting flights via Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami on propeller planes. Tuesday - Direct!! Thank you Delta!

Just wanted to take a little space and wish my Orange Boy a very Happy Birthday. When he was little, he used to tell all the girls that he was a sweetheart because he was born on Valentine's day! And he truly is a sweetheart and a wonderful young man... It is an honor to be his momma.

I also want to report that little Stephen entered this world on Wed. Feb. 11 and mommy and baby are doing spectacular. It was hard for me to leave and I am practicing being a grandma. It is fun!

Oh my gosh, its Monday of baby week. Stephen is being induced on Wednesday at 4am. I hardly slept a wink last night between the excitement, anxiety, heartburn and extreme baby kicks. I guess Stephen is excited too. Chris, on the other hand, was snoring 2 minutes after his head hit the pillow. I bet he was the kind of kid who even slept through the night on Christmas Eve. Not me! And I doubt the next 2 nights (or 18 years for that matter!) will see much sleep. I spent about an hour on Ravelry looking for some easy patterns for the hospital. Anything with little to no counting or shaping or fancy stitches. I'll probably start something this afternoon.

Here is the Baby Kimono I finished for my friend's little girl, Brookelynn. Isn't that the cutest name!! She is 3 months old. I hope it fits. I used Nature's Palette Green Sheep Organic Wool, which you may recognize from Kiki the Kitty, completed last week. This was my second project using only 2 skeins and I STILL have some left over! Great great yarn.Here's my diaper bag- finally finished! I really wanted until the last minute, huh? Amy Butler fabric- LOVE her. There are lots of great pockets inside and the top zips closed. Oh yes, its quite fancy. And its full of wipes, butt creams, diapers and disposable breast pads. Isn't motherhood glamorous?I'll post pictures of the little man as soon as I can. Gammaw is coming to Huntsville on Wednesday. Can't wait!!!

Stash Busting!

Well, I think the nesting has really kicked in now. I just can't stop. But its not cleaning I'm doing...its knitting! I can't stop! As soon as I finish a project, I have to start another one!!

Here's a little pair of mitts I made this weekend. I used a random skein of Louet I had in my stash LOVE Louet, btw). The pattern is very loosely based on this. I think they will come in handy for stroller pushing in the early spring. For some reason, Chris doesn't want a matching pair- whats his deal??? (please excuse the belly shadow in the picture! lol!)
Here is Kiki the Kitty I made from Nature's Pallete Green Sheep Organic Wool for a friend's daughter. The wool softens up with every wash, so Kiki took a few dips in the hot tub with some laundry before I sewed her up. Great easy pattern for stash busting!I started another baby sweater too and finished half of it during the superbowl last night. I imagine I'll be posting pictures of it in the next few days. What should I start on next....

The little man's coming home outfit is all finished! I found these sweet buttons that say "Little Lamb" on them. I thought that was appropriate for my little wooly booly. :)
On Saturday, Chris had to work so I did a little shopping. Lately, I've had an uncontrollable hatred for the way our living room was decorated- its so dark and outdated- ick! So I hit up my favorite thrift stores and scored these cute pots for $.75 each and found this awesome fabric at the fabric store on clearance for $4 a yard! Here's a shot of the unfinished curtains. It just brightens up the whole room. I feel much better, but I don't think Chris will be leaving me unattended on a Saturday anymore.

Little man is due to arrive at anytime. I was 1.5 cm dilated at my last appointment, so he probably won't come tonight, but we are moving in the right direction! Chris and I get our diplomas from childbirth class tomorrow, the carseat is installed, the nursery is finished, the coming home outfit has buttons, the wipe warmer is warming- we are READY!!!

Month of Nesting- Week 2

We had our 36 week appointment this morning- I'm not dilated or effaced at all (boo!), but Stephen is head down and moving in the right direction. We had another ultrasound and got a great shot of his little button nose (Gammaw's nose actually!) and his manhood- he's definitely a boy! The doctor guesses that he will be about 8 lbs if he comes on time. I think I can handle that.

I finished the little bundle of joy's coming home outfit this week. It was one of those projects I couldn't put down. I just have to sew on the buttons. Cute, huh?
The curtains are hung! I love them! They need one small alteration that will be completed tomorrow...and I've been saying that since Monday. Really though, I'll do it tomorrow...:)Here's the sailboat "artwork" I've been working on. The fabric will be wrapped around a wooden frame we got from Ikea. LOVE Ikea. I just have to finish hand stitching the boats. This was a really fun and CHEAP project that anyone could do.
All you need is:
fabric scraps
heavy interfacing (I used decor-bond)
a wooden frame
Cross stitching thread (or you could machine stitch too I suppose)

First, I made a pattern of the shapes I needed using butcher paper.Then, I cut out my fabric shapes with a 5/8 in border to be folded over.
Next, I used my pattern pieces to cut out interfacing, which I ironed onto the wrong side of the fabric.Then, I ironed the border over onto the wrong side, to make a nice clean edge for the front.Now, all you do is pin the pieces where you want them and hand or machine stitch them on. I'll probably line the white fabric so you can't see the wood frame.
Easy!Next week, I'll be making the cribskirt and my diaper bag, which I purchased fabulous Amy Butler fabric for. I can't wait!!!

The Month of Nesting- Week One

Well, I'm officially finished with my office job and only 5 weeks away from babytime...assuming he comes on time (hint, hint Stephen!!) I've been quite the busy Mommy this week working on all the projects I've been putting off. First up, curtains for the nursery. I just have to finish the sides and have Daddy mount the curtain rod. I'll post pictures when they're complete. Note- may I just brag a little and tell you that we decorated the nursery for under $150, bedding and all, (Not including the crib and dresser of course- I'm not THAT good) and its turning out quite cute if I may say so!
Next up, making cloth diapers from Daddy's old undershirts. I found this great idea here, and its going very well. The cotton makes such soft diapers, I'm sure Stephen will thoroughly enjoy soaking them. I'm also finishing a knitted diaper cover made with some left over wool from my stash. I just have to sew in the velcro.
And last but not least on my list for this week: Stephen's coming home outfit!!! Found this adorable pattern on Ravelry and it calls for size 10 1/2 needles- Hallelujah!!! Everything else asked for 4s and 5s- no way, no how! I'm really really excited about this little suit. I'll post more pictures as it progresses.
Other things this week has included: 1 nap, 1 doctor's appointment, 2 pair velour pajama pants, 1 Sonic Hot Fudge Sundae, 5 cases of heartburn, 2 weird dreams, 1 brisk walk, 2 new recipes, 4 episodes of Golden Girls and 1 Prepared Childbirth Class. Its been a GREAT week!!

I wanted to show off one hand dyed, hand knit Malabrigo scarf from my dear Cheryl. She knows the color is one of my favorite and she got the shade just right! I love it. And since it is going to be a wind chill of ZERO (0) yes, zero on Friday, it will most certainly be welcome.

Also new to the shop, the much anticipated Hiya Hiya Needle gauges. Why? Because they will measure to a 6-0 size needle. Yep, that's right, 6-0!

Also stay tuned today as I post new photos of Pagewood Farms Chugiak and Denali sock yarns. Gorgeous, enchanting colors.

Cannot believe it has been almost 2 weeks since I posted. Wow.

Christmas was glorious, as always and I wanted to show off this wreath that Crafty Cheryl made for me.

The best thing of all, Island Girl, Orange Boy and I have purchased webcams. We can now begin to see each other whilst conversing and it works great! Test drive was last night with IG. I am soooo excited.

Wow, where has time gone?

I just realized I have not blogged in quite some time and thank you my dear Cheryl, for taking up the slack! I love looking at the pictures of my little grandbaby's room - whose ETA is February 18, 2009!

Where have I been? Busy, like so many of you. You guys have been shopping like crazy and I am trying to keep up with your orders. That is not a complaint but a Thank you! Some of you have written they are gifts for others and some are shopping for themselves. Hey, nothing wrong with that...

About 2 weeks ago, I drove up to north Georgia to visit an apple farm. They had some Stayman Winesaps and Fuji apples that looked delightful. I bought 3 - 1/2 bushels - came home and put up about 8 gallon size

freezer bags of apples pie mix and 14 pints of applesauce. These apples were so sweet that I used no sugar at all in either the pie stuff or the applesauce.

I use my great grandmother's apple grinder that was passed right on down to me. The wooden "oar" is thinned out from so much use but I treasure it. However, if I am making slightly chunky sauce, I just use a tater masher.

Not only that, but I have been very busy ordering new yarns and goodies for the shop. Hope your holiday season is going great.

Stash Buster- Bath Poofs

While searching for quick but cool Christmas gifts to knit, I discovered this pattern for a "bonbon", or bath poof. I used a skein of Mango Moon I've had for quite a while, and big needles- size 15, my FAVORITE! Instead of just knitting straight, I did a little feather and fan action to make it a little more jazzy. It only took an hour and I used it in the shower last night. Unfortunately, the Mango Moon wasn't the best choice of yarn, as it lacks necessary scrubbing action needed to make a good bubbly lather. I have some bamboo and some nettle I'm going to try next, or there's always good old fashioned cotton!

Hello everyone! Sorry its been FOREVER since I've written, but its been crazy times here in Huntsville.

After enjoying a decadent Thanksgiving dinner (in our pajamas) Chris and I painted the nursery (well, I didn't actually DO the painting...I supervised). Our theme is sailboats/little nautical cutie pie baby

Here's a picture of the partially assembled crib and the painted walls. We are getting so excited! We got a anchor and ships steering wheel at Hobby Lobby (50% off thank you very much) and I got awesome fabric for the curtains on sale at Hancock on Saturday and I'll be stitching away all week!

My friend Phyllis, blogger of Knit and Purr, whom I met at Noble Knitters, went all sweet on me. Well, not that she wasn't always that way, Phyllis is a sweetheart. She bought me a skein of Wollmeise from the Ravelry group: Completely Pointless and Arbitrary Group under their RAK 4 Angels Swap. I'm not feeling too angelic but apparently Phyllis thought I was... Thank you my friend! I will think of you everytime I pet my skein of Wollmeise. It is gorgeous. The colorway is Versuchskaninchen1. She bought it from a Ravelry lady in Germany. I will be thinking of a special project for this yarn. Talk about making my day. Not only did a beautiful skein of Wollmeise arrive but also little German teabags, wafer cookies and treats! Wow, I feel special all because of you, Phyllis ...

I broke my own rule...

I broke my own rule about knitting socks - I always start one, finish the toe, start another one and work on them simultaneously. Well as I was gearing up for my out of town adventure, I grabbed this Lorna's Laces Sport weight sock yarn in Aslan and away I went. I have made a lot of progress on it - mostly while on planes, my usual: turkish caston, toe up, and then I am knitting a 3/2 rib. Very stretchy and I love them. These will be for me!

I hit the ground running when I got home Sunday evening. You guys did lots of shopping whilst the shipping department was away and thank you all! Don't you just love the Debra's Garden Needle gauges ? I know many of you do. Whether for yourself or a knittin' friend, you will love these high quality tools...

While I was gone, my mother went on a whirlwind trip as well and had a problem with her vision - visited a local doctor where she was and found out she has Macular Degeneration in both eyes, one worse than the other. She was devastated to say the least but we are now hitting it head on. While there is absolutely no cure for it, there are treatments in the eye that can (hopefully) slow the progression. 3 things she loves at this age of 82 - reading, playing cards and knitting... So I am keeping positive thoughts about these treatments.

Anywho, The Yarn Grove is busy gearing up for the holiday season and hope you all are too.

I just wanted to show off *again* some great sample socks my long time buddy, Paula, made for us for a show. These are the Mustard colorway from Louet in the Gems Fingering weight. Paula loves this yarn. Actually, I have never met a yarn Paula didn't like. She can turn out some socks. Amazing...

In other news, we are continuously getting in needles from Hiya Hiya. I am currently testing another size for us - in between 9" and 16". Any thoughts on those 2 sizes - 11or12", drop me an email at janeATtheyarngrove.com?

My first pair of Picky Pants, done! Well, they're for my soon to be grandbaby boy, Stephen.

To recap, Lorna's Laces Worsted Weight in Envy colorway and the pattern was so detailed and I absolutely loved it. Can't wait to cast on another pair! And I love saying "Picky Pants".

Just made 2 new cakes of yarn which I will cast on for a new project tonight... They will be a gift for a special friend...

Itty Bitty Hat

Hope your week has been filled with lots of fiber! Mine has and I am working on a pair of Picky Pants that is such a fun knit. It is a pattern from Little Turtle Knits and the directions are so clear and precise for several different sizes. This pair should fit up to a 12 pound baby, over cloth diapers. I will show a picture of them early next week (or before if I get finished). I am knitting them out of Lorna's Laces Worsted weight, Envy colorway.

I did finish a little hat for my soon to be grandbaby to match his baby surprise jacket which was Lorna's Laces Sport Weight yarn in the Devon colorway. This was a free pattern from Just Jussi who has adorable patterns.

It is finally raining today - a nice steady rain and the temperature will hopefully start droppin' just a tad. Hope your weekend is a marvelous one!

Some house picks

Here are some pictures of what we have done in the new house:

This is the dining room. I got the curtains at a glorious place called Old Time Pottery. I knew that if I tried to sew curtains for the entire house PLUS baby bedding PLUS a maternity bridesmaids dress for a wedding in November, that I would never sleep again. SO for $10 a panel, the curtains became mine! Oh also, I installed the curtain rod all by myself. Including dry wall anchors! Amazing, huh?

Here's a closeup of Mona's kitty window seat that Chris made for her. We call this window the "TV." Mona loves her perch- You can see that she just woke up.

Chris enjoys yardwork (a little too much judging by this picture)

Here's the kitchen. Please note the yellow countertops. The floor and walls are also all yellow. That is want prompted the wallpaper. There isn't much you can do with yellow countertops other than go with it.

Here is the bedroom. Chris painted before we moved in, thank goodness- the color is called "Airy." Isn't it peaceful? We just need to hang some stuff on those bare walls!

The nursery and the craft room are still completely messy. We are slowly working away...

Baby Surprise... done!

My first ever Baby Surprise Jacket. Already I know that I will be making more. This was truly a fun knit. I decided when I finished that I did not want 5 buttons on it, so I did try to cinch up the buttonholes, a bit. But alas, I can still see them. Also, I will do a different increase stitch next time and be a bit more careful when picking up stitches. But all in all, I am pleased with it and I know that Stephen will love it. I am currently working on a matching hat. That should be something I can work on at Noble Knitters tonight without too much concentration... To recap: Yarn used Lorna's Laces Sport in the Devon Colorway and Hiya Hiya 24" Circs Bamboo in a US 3.

Wow, the Harry Potter yarn has been extremely popular and no wonder. Opal is a great sock yarn and fun to knit and watch the patterns evolve.

Also just refreshed at The Yarn Grove - more Nature's Palette fingering weight and of course, Hiya Hiya needles in a multitude of popular sizes... Hope your days include lots of fiber!

BOY!!! Little Stephen Renwick was kind enough to give us a full spread eagle shot of his privates right away! We are beyond thrilled. I haven't gotten any work done today, I've just been sitting here dreaming about tee-ball and tiny sneakers and little bowties on easter morning and this jacket from Baby Gap. I also picked out my first knitting project from ravelry. I guess I did do something at work today!

Hat in a weekend

I whipped this hat up for a friend's birthday a few weekends ago. Sweet Scott- Spottie's FAVORITE uncle and the world's nicest guy. I used 2 Lorna's Laces colors from my (out of control) stash. It was fun to knit and only took a Saturday- I used my Turbos, which give me super powers and lightning fast speed.

Other than that, I really haven't been knitting much. We moved into our new house 3 weeks ago, so I've been spending most my time shopping for or making curtains, installing curtain rods- oh yes, all by myself- telling Chris where to hang art work and unpacking. Not to mention working full time and sleeping as much as possible. We find out tomrrow if we are having a boy or a girl, so soon nursery preparations will commence! If its a boy, I'm going to do a nautical/sailboat room, and if its a girl, I'm going to do a pink and green garden with little birds and bugs and flowers. I've been secretly shopping online for fabric in my spare time at work. Shhh, don't tell!

We've already started to receive gifts and hand me downs. We got an almost brand new swing, a basinette, 12 bottles and a sterilizer, a sleep positioner, a travel swing and lots of cute toys from the Bruno/Miller/Lamandola clan. Gammaw sent us a sample pack of cloth diapers. My favorite is the Bum Genius 3.0 One Size Pocket Diaper- doesn't that sound high tech! Its the cutest little thing you've ever seen too.

Harry Potter Sock Yarn ... It's Here!

Harry Potter Sock Yarn is here at The Yarn Grove. While we only got about 40% of our initial order due to the Tutto Factory floods in Germany, we will be receiving the balance of our initial shop order soon.

Surprises for me today...

I have had a morning full of surprises! To begin, I had to take hubby's glasses to him at the shop and whilst I was out, passed 4 gas stations ... no gas. Oh boy, now I am getting a little antsy. For those of you who do not know, there is a "gas shortage" in the Atlanta area and yes, people have panicked. The lines at the gas stations *who* have gas, can be upwards of up to 2 hours wait. But hubby tells me that the local wholesale club was pumping gas this morning on his way to work. Surprise 1: I went there on my way home and was in and out in less than 7 minutes! Just like normal! Wow. I felt lucky.

Surprise 2: Stopped by Publix grocery store to pick up a couple of items and they have a "penny coupon" each Sunday and Monday. Sometimes I just don't make it there on either of those days but today I did and the penny was a jar of peanut butter.

Surprise 3: They also have some great BOGO (buy one get one frees) most weeks and my Publix lets you buy just one of those BOGO's for 1/2 off. So they had a 4-pack of bagels for $1.00 and my bag actually had 5 bagels in it! Someone lost count, I guess.

Surprise 4: Speaking of lost count, I give you a photo of my Baby Surprise jacket and I must say, it has been a real fun project but also very challenging. I have joined the BSJ group on Ravelry and have found some great hints and help on there... I am knitting it up in Lorna's Laces Sport weight, the Devon colorway.

Surprise 5: Yet to be announced this week. Baby Bruno will hopefully reveal him/herself on Thursday, Oct. 2nd to let Gammaw know what color buttons to put on the BSJ. I have changed my mind twice. First I said girl, then I dreamed boy, but when I saw Cheryl last weekend, I said without a doubt in my mind, a girl.

A pack of pickles...

Looks like all I have been doing is packing pickles but actually, I have been knitting somewhat. Some cute washcloths - my mom has been busy knittin' them up for her up and coming great grandchild. wow. I can't believe my mom will be a ggmaw... I bought her a book of baby washcloths and I know she already gave Orange Boy and Cheryl a couple and is still working on them. She is really enjoying them.

Still working on Casablanca - ever so slowly - things have been really hopping around here. But I did start a Baby Surprise jacket in the Devon Colorway from Lorna's Laces. I say I started it - I mean I cast on for it a couple of nights ago. Does that count? I do have some lovely bread and butter pickles put up - about 13 pints. Yummmm...

Some HB and HP...

Fall is certainly on its way and for me, it is one of my favorite seasons. Already many of you I see on Ravelry on counting down til the holidays. Which brings me to the HB in my title. Hairbands... We have put together kits for covering your own hairbands. In this fun kit you will get 2 toothless hairbands, one 7/8" wide and one 1/4" wide, 3 mini skeins of yarn, a retractable mini tape measure (color will vary), and a pattern all inside of a reuseable square vinyl pouch. These are fun to wear and I have gotten many compliments on mine!

Now for the HP! Many of you can already guess that yes, it is the much anticipated release of the Harry Potter sock yarn from Opal. I received word this week that I can expect our order to ship towards the end of September. So be on the lookout for that.

We are now carrying HeartStrings patterns so check those out. I have my eye on a couple...

I got to see Orange Boy and Cheryl this past weekend and my little grandbaby is showing him/herself quite nicely! We are all anticipating the October 1 so I will know whether to knit more blue or pink...

Bring on the Fall!

Football season officially starts next weekend, which means knitting season also starts! Don't get me wrong, I like football and everything, but when its all your husband watches for 5 months, you need a little distraction! He watches, I knit. We coinside perfectly! And win or lose, at the end of every weekend, I have a fabulous project to show for it.

Last night, in preparation for kickoff, Orange boy and I boiled 2.5 pounds of peanuts and blanched and peeled 14 tomatoes from the garden for salsa. We're well on our way to stocking our freezer with a season's worth of football food!

As far as knitting goes, I'm working on socks (gasp!!) a few scarves that will be christmas presents, and I'm hoping to start another quilt soon.

September is only 9 days away!!! Beef up your stashes boys and girls- its going to be a long winter!!!!

Fun, fast gift idea...

I have been wanting to make this dust glove for a long while. These are fun, fast to make and make me smile. I mean, how much more fun can dusting be with one of these! Complete with its own bling... Here's how I made it...

Went to do$$ar store and found these knit gloves. I was actually looking for the standard muslin kind but how appropriate are these being that they are knitted.

Wrap yarn around cardboard at about 5-1/2 to 6" long for about 16 wraps. Place on the glove and take a length of yarn to secure down on the glove, tying the bundle in half. I used a Chibi needle. So easy.. Repeat until you have it as full as you would like. I used an entire ball of Peaches n Creme yarn but I am gathering all my remaining scraps to make a really colorful one.

As for the fingernails, I took Sticky Felt from the hobby store and drew on the paper side, cut them out and stuck them on the front. You don't have to give it a "ring" but I sewed some beads on. My next one is also going to have a bracelet...

These are fun and a great way to use of scraps...

I couldn't help it. I had to have them. Clemson newborn booties. Adorable. I will have to promise Cheryl that I will not buy or attempt to buy all things orange for the baby. however, I will have to knit baby at least one thing orange. Just one. Orange Boy will love them.

The visit with my 12yo niece was great. She is 5'10" and a sweetheart. It was an enlightening visit. How she has changed since last summer! Aunt Jane bought her some back to school clothes. The music was so loud in that store that I couldn't hear a thing and I felt quite old! But it was fun... She is a great bargain shopper and most all things bought were from the sale racks. Just like Aunt Jane : )

Back to knittin'. I am progressing nicely on Clue 3 in Casablanca and here is a photo . I did not stretch it out to photograph - mainly because I have no room on my work area. I have so many other projects going on - embroidery, shower invites, etc. so it is hard to tell. I am loving this pattern.

Also, a shot of the bib I am knitting in Peaches n creme from my stash. I think this is the Fiesta colorway and the pattern is from Mason Dixon Knitting Book. I love those gals. They are a hoot.

That's about all for now. Working on stuff for the shop - just not enough time in a day lately...
